If It Ain't a Turbo, Anything Less than 2.0L Ain't Hot-Rodding

When I was driving my Waja 1.6L (M), I thought I was among the fastest on the road. Generally, I was. But each time I came up against cars with bigger engines, I found my car severely wanting.

I'd heard of port & polish and engine blue-printing as means for ramping up the engine's horsepower, but they were just too costly and time consuming.

That's when I realised, if I wanted more power, I needed a bigger engine right off. Nothing less than a 2.0L engine would do, and if I had extra money, I could always ramp up the horsepower later.

Sure enough, these days, anything less than a 2.0L car poses little challenge for my Kia Forte 2.0SX.

This is why I can't help feel a little sorry for all those racer boys who drive sporty looking hatchbacks mated to 1.6L engines that are not equipped with turbo, like Satria Neo CPS and Ford Fiesta. They spend so much and get so little.

Of course, most people spend only on what they can afford when it comes to fast cars. I know because I'm still like that - if I had more money, I'd always choose to buy a faster car.

Nonetheless, I've learnt that there's not point in sporting fast looks on a car that won't go as fast as you'd like, which is why I fail to see the point in garish looking spoilers and skirting for cars that are actually quite slow, like the Neo CPS, Ford Fiesta and Honda City.

For me, understated beauty speaks volumes when it comes to speed, like the VW Golf and Scirocco - these cars are anything but garish, and just by looking at them, you know they're fast.

If you want to go with a small engine car and you're into speed, be sure to choose something with turbo in it, like the Peugeot 308 Turbo. It may look a little weird but it really is fast. Otherwise, you'll just be dreaming of hot-rodding, instead of doing it for real.

Car manufacturers will peddle you all sorts of gizmos like gasoline direct injected (GDI), dual CVVT and even dual clutch. At the end of the day, your 1.6L car would still be slower than most 2.0L cars, unless you go down the port & polish, engine blue-printing, slap-on turbo path.

So, don’t be easily taken in by cars like the Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Veloster.

  1. borink...do u think forte interior is better than 525??..come on la..typical korean car...oopsss ..made in gurun ..

  2. Obviously, you missed my point and replied in the wrong place too.

Anyway, I didn't say better interior. I said comparable (as in quality gap has closed in some respects or not very big in others.

Also, the Forte 2.0SX is a rebadged CBU.

And so what if Forte's are made in Gurun. They are better than what Proton makes in Shah Alam, defect/fault free reputation-wise.

  3. i bet u have never driven neo CPS..manual CPS can easily keep up with your forte 2.0..it much better car in term of handling..

  4. You're right about my not having driven the Neo CPS. But why would I want to drive an ugly under-performing car, what with its garish rear spoiler, over-flared wheel arches and sunken rims?

And it's quite obvious you have never driven the Forte 2.0SX, lest you would not have suggested that a less than 135BHp Neo CPS can keep up with a 156BHp Forte 2.0SX.

I know, because there have been a few racer boys in Neo CPSs who have tried and failed to keep up with my Forte.

Gooodness, the Neo CPS can barely keep up with the Honda Civic 1.8. So, it's certainly no challenge for the Forte 2.0, whose real competition is the Civic 2.0 or the new Focus 2.0 TDCI

Of course, if you had said the Neo 25th Anniversary Special Edition would be able to keep up with the Forte 2.0, then I would have agreed whole heartedly with you, albeit the Neo SE is 10BHp less powerful.

Also, if you have said "tuned up by NS Performance Tuning Neo CPS" that churns out 200BHp, then I would have to say, "Yes, well, that's the wonder of the guys at NS Performance Tuning."

And if you had said Neo Super 2000 that appeared on Proton-hating Top Gear, then I would have said... well, what more could I have said? The car driven by the Stig with pride speaks for itself.

But no, in your attempt to make me look silly, you said Neo CPS.

    Who's looking silly now?

  5. My brother own Forte 2.0 and i have taken it to sepang track day recently...the most important aspect is power to weight ratio man...the car really struggle in the corner and just able to keep up with my fren neo cps..tested and proven already on the track..on the highway, the maximum speed i clock with forte 2.0 is around 190kmh...you have to drive both cars to really understand how each car reacts..i bet u read too much car mags..

  6. Dude, you are so kiasu, spinning a most unlikely tale just to win an argument here. And still remain anonymous?

There is no reason for me to believe a word you said, especially the part where you took your brother's Forte 2.0 to the Sepang Track day.

Which day? My friend is a manager with Sepang International Circuit. Name the day, the time, etc.

Better yet, send me a picture. You did take a picture for memory's sake, yes? My email address is right on top of this page or grinnerwolff@yahoo.com.

Unbelievable! Why the heck would your brother let you take his Forte 2.0 to Sepang Track Day and not take it himself? The car is not built for track day - the rear suspension is too soft, the car is auto and its gearbox is not dual clutch. Buat malu muka aje.

Even my old Focus 2.0S, which is 10BHp less than the Forte 2.0, would be able to outperform the Forte on the tracks.

More importantly, indeed, power-to-weight ratio is important for racing, but at slower speeds and around corners.

At higher speeds and on straights, you still need raw power to push your car to even higher speeds.

That's why a Bugatti Veyron can have a poorer track time than a Lotus Esprit, and still leave the Esprit in the dust on the autobhan or straights.

Oklah, katalah your super-duper stock Proton Neo CPS is the King of Sepang Track Day. Out on the highways, chances are, it still has to move aside to the middle lane to let the not-built-for-the-track Kia Forte 2.0SX pass.

  8. I only tolerate stupidity up to a certain extent. If you have to resort to nastiness in order to win an argument, then you have nothing to offer.

In fact, it's a sure sign that you've lost the arugment and that you have to resort to "other means" just to win.

If we were face to face, I'd bet you'd be the first to strike a punch, because words can't avail you.

Come around again, I bet you would, just to show how "good" you are at being nasty.

And I'll just delete your comments over and over again.

Before I do, whoever else gets to read them would only see just how imbecilic you are. Nothing more.

  9. It's irritating to stumble upon a person like you. It's good that there aren't so many people like you.
I own a golf gti and several others and I do give my respects to other drivers no matter what car they're driving.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Golf GTI dude, it's not often that I come across a polite gti driver. Usually u guys are in a hurry and are impatient for others to move over. And when I do come across someone like that, I don't bother getting into a competition of any sort.
But that's beside the point is it, as is the intent of your post? Because you deliberately miss the point of my blog post. In the guise of politeness, you claim to respect other road users but don't have the simple decency to respect the real meaning of my post. Main lepas cakap nak lepas geram, ek? (Simple say what you want just to satisfy yourself, eh?).
Oh, and I 'like' the bit about you owning a gti and several others. It's classic 'show off' to justify why your opinion is necessarily better...

  11. Based on your comment before..i would give "Best Car of the Millenium" to your beloved Naza Forte....satisfied???...please respect others man..no matter what their rides..

  12. Anonymous/GTI Dude or whoever you are, you have no real appreciation for what it means to respect others, what with your childish sarcasm.

Bak kata, seperti ketam mengajar anak berjalan lurus (you're like a crab who tells its children not to walk sideways).

Go drive your GTI off a cliff for all I care...

  17. lol..waz thinking of buying neo cps...having second thought now..sob~

  18. Dude, the Satria Neo is still one of the nicest looking cars in Malaysia. I must admit this, as I tend to stare at it a lot when I'm on the road.

Too bad the CPS doesn't quite do the Neo justice.

If you really want a Satria Neo and want it for more than just its looks, go for the Satria Neo R3. This is a bonafide sports car in the below RM100,000 range.

Judging by its power output and cornering performance, the Satria Neo R3 is a reasonably cheap sports car to have if you're not into buying expensive-to-maintain second hand sports cars like the Mazda RX8, etc.

    Cheers and God bless.

  19. Dude, your comment is so contradicting...
1st you say... "You're right about my not having driven the Neo CPS. But why would I want to drive an ugly under-performing car, what with its garish rear spoiler, over-flared wheel arches and sunken rims?"

then u say ... "Dude, the Satria Neo is still one of the nicest looking cars in Malaysia. I must admit this, as I tend to stare at it a lot when I'm on the road."

    Hmmm...

    ReplyDelete
  20. No it isn't.

Kindly read carefully. Satria Neo CPS and Satria Neo are two different variants.

While the Neo CPS is downright ugly due to questionable design features, the Satria Neo has understated beauty that makes people turn to look.

  21. Boy... Sorry to interupt

Driving a hatchback & a sedan are 2 different categories... More over most Korean only have the sporty look but not the car technology...

Conti-cars are much advance in terms of safety, stability & overall performance. What you can do by having a powerful engine but weak stopping power, bloggy curves, hi-tech audio???

Try to beat down Mazda RX8 just 1.3L... If u can smell the RX8 i consider u r good~ I will said if you driving a Satria Neo (manual) u still able to have some trailing... A Forte Coupe might be good in straight, sorry once it throw the corner...

Dear 123, i kinda like Satria Neo with or without CPS, more over Satria GTi is a legend =)

I agree that Grinner you read too much from mag, even u been to a track to test drive in Sepang but it doesn't show that you know how to drive...

I suggest u watch Initial D, an old tofu car can beat a Skyline R32 in early episode... =P

    Drive safe~

  22. I'm a middle aged man and I'm being called "boy". LOL.

Anonymous, tell me something I don't already know.

Mazda RX8 is only a 1.3L but it's a rotary engine car and so, the 1.3L is not a true measurement/indicator of performance. But I guess I wasn't pedantic enough in trying to make the distinction in my original post.

I read to much car mags? Actually, I don't read a lot of them at all - mostly Cars, Bikes and Trucks, and only on occasions. The rest is from experience and deductive reasoning.

I don't show I know how to drive here at my blog? With the kind of driving experience that I have on and off the track, on and off the roads? Yeah, whatever...

    Drive safe? Always.

  25. Bro, saya sudah tua laaa...

My street racing days are well behind me :P

Now, my fast driving is more sedate, such that I let people cut in front of me even though they may hold me back or hold up traffic.

And really, I don't mind, even though my Mazda6 2.5 s-vt can outpace most cars on the roads, except BMWs, Mercs, Audis, etc.

Drive fast, but drive safe, bro :)
